Open Data Policy Lab Releases State of Open Data Policy Summit Key Highlights Video

On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, The Open Data Policy Lab hosted its inaugural “State of Open Data Policy Summit.” Over the course of three hours, leaders from around the world came together to discuss the past, present, and future of open data policy. High-ranking officials in industry, government, and civil society participated in keynotes and panel discussions on the policies needed to support impactful (re)use of data for the public good.

Last month, we published the Summit in its entirety on YouTube. To highlight major takeaways from the speakers, we are happy today to release a brief promotional video capturing important remarks from each participant.

The video begins with an excerpt from The GovLab’s Stefaan Verhulst, who discusses the open questions about open data policy, the impact it has on private sector repositories, the role of government, and more. From there, it captures points made by Catherine Stihler (Creative Commons), Charlie Martial Ngounou (AfroLeadership), and Jiri Pilar on the policies needed to foster open data in the public sector at the global, national, regional, and local level.

Watch the video here.

After highlighting aspects of Microsoft Vice President and Chief Data Officer Juan Lavista M. Ferres’s keynote on the opportunities data provides, including his take that data is not the new oil, but rather, the new code.

Finally, it provides excerpts of points made by Ioana Stoenescu (Roche), Fiona Greig (JP Morgan Chase Institute), Caroline Louveaux (Mastercard), and Brennan Lake (Spectus) on how the private sector can embrace data openness in the areas that they work.

We encourage anyone interested in open data or open data policy to watch the video to listen to these points firsthand. We will be using these inputs in the coming weeks and months to inform our work on the Third Wave of Open Data.
